Obama supports massive public works program, could include $100 billion for green-collar jobs
Articles — By forcechange on December 7, 2008 3:39 pmAs Tom Friedman noted on Sunday, the federal government is about to spend billions and billions of dollars trying to save and stimulate the economy– how that money is spent will determine whether we calcify the decrepit status quo, or plant the seeds for transformative change and growth.
In Obama’s weekly address on Saturday, he advocated his support for the largest public works program in more than half a century.
The plan would cover a broad range of programs and industries, including broadband Internet access, construction of new schools, upgrading public utilities, and other energy and environmental projects including work on electric grids, alternative fuels, wind farms, solar panels, and efficiency upgrades. It is estimated that the green-collar portion of the package alone could run as high as $100 billion over two years.
As for results, Obama notes “We’ll measure progress by the reforms we make and the results we achieve by the jobs we create, by the energy we save, by whether America is more competitive in the world.”
