Cell phones are a major source of e-waste

With a growing awareness of e-waste, we were interested to see CNET’s report that “among some 150 million [cell phone] handsets retired every year, fewer than 20 percent are recycled.”

The post also states that “less than five percent of the world’s handsets will be recycled ethically.”  While they do not expand on what constitutes “ethical” recycling, we assume it is in contrast to the highly unethical e-waste recycling that is occurring throughout the world.

The post also describes a cool green gimmick phone that “if buried in the ground, it would biodegrade, freeing embedded bamboo seeds to sprout a plant.”
