Target: Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina
Goal: Commend insurance provider for reversing corporate policies that had stripped gay couples of their insurance coverage
Gay and lesbian couples who have purchased family insurance from Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) were recently left without coverage as their policies were unceremoniously cancelled. This was a shocking announcement from the insurer, which is largely regarded as a gay-friendly company that provides same-sex benefits for its own employees. The insurance provider opted to cancel policies on the grounds that the language applied exclusively to heterosexual couples, citing the use of terms such as “opposite sex” and “spouse” in its decision to drop same-sex couples. Blue Cross Blue Shield notified the holders of 20 family policies that they would be forced to reapply as unmarried single individuals should they choose to retain their coverage. Though North Carolina does not currently recognize same-sex marriage, this protocol would force couples who were legally married in other states to lie on their insurance applications.
Thankfully, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina has rectified this egregious and insulting oversight by reinstating family insurance plans to those whose coverage was denied. Shortly after recognizing the problem, BCBSNC created a work-around and announced that they will manually process all same-sex family insurance applications. Reasonable access to healthcare is important to the stability of all families, regardless of whether or not those families are federally recognized. BCBSNC took a decisive step in honoring the sanctity of same-sex marriages and its implications for legal infrastructures. Dear Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina,
Thank you for reversing corporate decisions which cancelled family insurance policies held by same-sex couples. While the initial roller coaster of administrative changes has left many policy holders offended and confused, I appreciate that you have expediently taken the necessary steps to remedy this oversight. Families headed by same-sex couples are families nonetheless; they deserve to be recognized and insured as such. Your efforts are compassionate and progressive, reflecting the milieu of our time as America moves into a modern and accepting 21st century.
You have set a fine example by holding yourself accountable for mistakes and accommodating the needs of your policyholders. I applaud your decision to restore family coverage to same-sex couples, insuring that all of North Carolina’s dedicated families receive the healthcare coverage they deserve.
