Target: Enoch City, Utah police
Goal: Demand justice for filly found frozen to the ground
A young pony was recently found frozen to a patch of mud near Salt Lake City, Utah. She, along with her mother, was malnourished and starving. Passersby noticed the filly (young female horse)’s mother in distress and called for help. The filly, who rescuers named Elsa, and her mother, who they named Anna after the main characters in the Disney movie Frozen, were taken to Dust Devil Ranch Sanctuary for Horses near Cedar City, Utah.
“There’s a body imprint, where you can see every hair strand,” said Ginger Grimes, who runs Dust Devil Ranch Sanctuary for Horses. She was called to help recover the horses. Elsa suffered several injuries from being frozen to the ground. Her eye was partially frozen and infected with pieces of ice and dirt. She had sores on the side of her face and body and was suffering from hypothermia, along with being malnourished to the point of starvation.
Veterinarians gave Elsa a 20% chance of survival. She and her mother had been abandoned and Elsa had not been properly cared for, probably since birth, according to Grimes.
Elsa was in bad shape when she got to the sanctuary. She could not lift her head on her own; it had to be positioned for her to drink. Eventually, volunteers lifted her into a sling to allow her to stand. She stood for nearly an hour one day. “Once she was up, she didn’t want to lay down,” Grimes said. “We brought her mom in to see her, and they were rubbing each others’ noses.”
After a few days, veterinarians estimated her chances of survival at 80% if she could overcome a few more hurdles. Sadly, however, she succumbed to her malnourishment and died after ten days. The horses’ owner, an Enoch City, Utah man, has been issued with a citation for two counts of animal cruelty, a class ‘B’ misdemeanor. Demand justice for Elsa and her mother. Whoever did this to these horses needs to be punished.
Dear Enoch police,
Please do not rest until you charge the person responsible for little Elsa’s death. This filly and her mother were found in despicable shape. They were malnourished and abandoned. Sadly, Elsa lost her life due to the neglect of the person who was responsible for her, and her mother still has a long way to go before she is healthy. Someone should answer for this filly and her dam’s condition.
Animal neglect and abuse is a major problem. Charging the person who allowed these horses to get in such terrible condition may be hard, but it is worth it to send a message that animal abuse and neglect is not acceptable. Please hold whoever did this to these horses accountable.
