Stop Dolphin Slaughter in Japan

Target:  Japanese Ambassador to the United States, Sasae Kenichiro

Goal: End the traditional capture and slaughter of dolphins in Taiji, and boycott Japanese products until this happens

The annual dolphin slaughter in Taiji, Japan has begun again. For this slaughter, the local residents come together to trap hundreds of dolphins in a cove in order to butcher them. The villagers beat the dolphins with mallets in order to drive them into the cove and trap them behind a net. After a small group of dolphins is removed from the pod to be sold to aquatic parks, the rest are brutally killed by having a long, steel pin driven into their brainstem. The dolphin meat, which contains such a high level of mercury that it is dangerous to eat, is distributed among the villagers and sold at grocery stores. It is a senselessly brutal activity, and we must boycott Japanese products until the Japanese government puts an end to the practice.

Since the release of the movie The Cove, these massacres are no longer a secret. But despite the protests of so many people, the Japanese government has refused to do anything to slow or end the slaughter.  Activists are harassed and threatened by the Japanese fishermen who attempt to prevent the activists from documenting their actions on film. Japanese police often close public areas in order to make it more difficult to view or film the slaughter.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society witnessed one particularly gruesome slaughter recently.  Upwards of 250 dolphins at once, including many babies and juveniles, were herded into a cove and slaughtered.

If the Japanese government refuses to do anything about the dolphin slaughter in Taiji, the cruel practice will continue. In fact, the slaughters have become even larger in recent years. We must come together to condemn this barbarity and tell the Japanese government that we intend on boycotting Japanese products for as long as this dolphin massacre continues.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ambassador Sasae:

In Taiji, Japan, it is a tradition for the local residents to come together to trap hundreds of dolphins in a cove in order to slaughter them. After capturing some of the dolphins so that they can be inhumanely confined for the rest of their lives in aquatic parks, the rest are brutally killed.

This slaughter of dolphins is a barbaric and unnecessary practice. It is a senseless massacre that the rest of the world watches with horror. Dolphins are sensitive, intelligent creatures and deserve to be treated with greater respect by the people of Japan.

I urge you to advise your government to end this senseless massacre. As long as this slaughter continues, I intend on avoiding the purchase of any products that are imported from Japan.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

This MUST stop! It is horrendous! We all need to learn the lesson that we are all connected and must love, respect and cherish our beautiful world in all its diversities. This applies to each human being for WE are ultimately responsible for ourselves and the effect of our every thought, word and deed. Condemning the persons responsible isn’t helpful. Condemning their actions leaves room for reflection and possible change. Change needs to come from within or the practice may go ‘underground.’

The Japanese people on a whole are not bad people. There are a lot of bad things going on with animals all over the globe. In Canada the baby harp seals are clubbed to death for their fur. That is just one example. Even one of the main men working on the cove said he does not blame the people in Japan for the problem. Most of them do not even know it is happening. At least the movie is helping others to become more aware.

  3. DO NOT CAPTURE AND KILL DOLPHINS AT ALL!!! AQUATIC PARKS SHOULD BE FORBIDDEN EVERYWHERE!!! DOLPHINS ARE EXTREMLY INTELLIGENT AND SENSIBLE ANIMALS, FOR SURE MORE THAN MANY HUMAN BEEINGS!!!

  4. Michael Kullik says:

All animals need to be respected. And it is only few people that are involved in this. I have no direct knowledge of what the Gov’t is doing to stop this.

I do know this humnas have treated animals bad for a long time they also treat other humans bad too. It is good that you are reacting to the treatment of the dolphins but do not be upset with everyone in Japan. That is not how this will turn around. We need to let the govt know we do not approve. We also dropped bombs on Japan to stop the war. War is not pretty war is not what we want. We want this to stop.

THIS IS WHY THE UNITED NATIONS WAS MADE SO EVERY ONE SEE AN KNOW WHY THE WORTHLESS KILL OF TO MANY IS WRONG. BUT GET THIS, THERE ARE TO MANY GETTING PAY OFFS AN SITTING WITH NO IDEA WHAT IS REAL OR NOT. THEY LIVE IN THIS BUBBLE AN NEVER SEE THE HELL, AN THE BLOOD AN THE, WAY MEN BECOME NOTHING BUT ANIMALS, DRUNK IN THE KILLING OF A LIFE FORM.THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THEM GREEDY MOTHERS IS TO JUST GIVE THEM A CHANGE TO LEAVE THE AREA AN SINK THERE BOATS, OR DO TO THE HUMANS THE SAME THEY DO TO THE DOLPHINS, AN WHALES. IT’S ONLY RESEARCHER, THEY WILL BE KILLED FOR AN THEM I WILL EAT THEM. WHY NOT? WHAT THE MEAT TO GO TO WASTE?

  7. Did you know that the ultrasound waves dolphins use to communicate with each other prevent earthquakes? Now think about this once more.. is it really a coincidence that a tzunami, caused by an earthquake hit Japan? That’s how the Mother Nature reacts to your shameful, disgusting, inhuman, cruel acts against her! Believe in God or don’t, believe in Justice or don’t, it doesn’t matter.. everything what happens in the Universe HAS A REASON! And I’m sure it will happen again.. until you learn your lesson! Deal with it!

  8. Many Americans love and/or respect the Japanese people. But I don’t understand why they permit this. They need to get angry and protest in the streets about Japan slaughtering such an intelligent beautiful creature such as the dolphin. Please Japanese people, HELP THEM!
    Love, America

The Indian parliament has just passed a law that states that whales and dolphins are non-human people on an equal place to humans in the eyes of the law. That means their lives and living space are protected by law.
Lets ask every nation to do the same!
