Target: Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission (the Executive Branch of the European Union)
Goal: Applaud the European Union for continuing to reject genetically-modified crops
The European Union (EU), and the United Kingdom in particular, have consistently shown opposition to genetically-modified (GM) crops. In 2013, Poland became the eighth EU member state to ban the cultivation of GM crops, and Italy became the ninth member later in the year. Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Greece, and Bulgaria previously banned GM crops, citing that there have been no scientific assessments confirming that GM crops are safe for human consumption or the environment.
However, politicians like Owen Paterson, Secretary of State for the Environment, are becoming increasingly frustrated with the EU’s resistance to GM technology. In a recent press conference, he told delegates, “Well-regulated GM technology presents some of the biggest and most exciting opportunities for agriculture.” Paterson is not concerned with health or the environment. Instead, he is concerned about consumer trade and profit. “I think Europe is becoming a bit of a backwater,” he explained. “The US and Canada say to us ‘we can go and trade with Asia and the other exciting growth markets.’ It is really important that we do not undermine our ability to trade and allow our market to be distorted.”
Sign the below petition to encourage the EU to stay strong in its ban against GM crops. Despite strong consumer resistance, a vote will take place in the European Parliament later this month to decide whether a license will be granted for growing an insect-resistant variety of maize. If approved, this would be the first GM food crop authorized by the EU for planting in 15 years. The risks of GM food are well-documented and well-known throughout the world. Without the EU’s leadership, agriculture will begin to have devastating effects on our health and our land.
Dear President Barroso,
Under the European Union’s guidance and leadership, Europe has become the most progressive continent in the world to oppose GM crops and stand up for human health and environmental preservation. Please review the results of recent GM crop studies and encourage your fellow EU members to do the same. This way, you can make an informed vote against GM maize in Europe later this month.
I am urging you to stand strong against influential politicians who value trade and consumerism over the environment and public health. Advocates for GM crops have yet to prove their safety, and no amount of money is worth the loss of human health and lives. Thank you and your colleagues for supporting sustainable agriculture for over 15 years and serving as a respectable example to the rest of the world.
