Target: Mississippi Senator Deborah Dawkins
Goal: Save roosters from a painful death by making cockfighting a felony in Mississippi
Although cockfighting has been outlawed in the United States since the 1800s, Mississippi is one of 10 states where violators of the law are only charged with a misdemeanor and a maximum fine of $100. In the other 40 states, animal abusers who subject roosters to this violent bloodsport receive felony charges and much higher penalties.
Bred to be aggressive and equipped with razor blades that are attached to their legs, cockfighting roosters are trained to fight to the death. Surviving roosters are likely to suffer broken bones, pierced eyes and punctured organs, in which case they are no longer healthy enough for matches and are often left to die by their human trainers.
With its weak laws and low fines, Mississippi is a hotspot for this illegal and sadistic sport. Citizens from all over the country flock to the state, despite the fact that it is also illegal to cross states lines for the sole purpose of attending an animal fight.
Tell government officials that you support efforts to create and pass a bill that would make cockfighting in Mississippi a felony that carries a much larger fine, and help put an end to this cruel sport.
Dear Senator Dawkins,
Mississippi is one of just 10 states in the U.S. where cockfighting is not a felony. Individuals caught participating in this cruel bloodsport only receive misdemeanor charges and a small $100 fine.
Bred for unnatural aggression and fitted with razorblades attached to their legs, cockfighting roosters are forced to battle to the death. The surviving bird typically suffers life-threatening injuries such as broken bones and pierced organs. Now unsuitable for future cockfights, the rooster’s injuries go untreated and it is left to die a slow, painful death while the trainer prepares another bird for the ring.
Not only is cockfighting incredibly barbaric and inhumane, but it is also a breeding ground for other illegal activities, including drug sales and gambling. Enforcing stricter cockfighting laws would help save these naturally gentle creatures from unnecessary slaughter as well as deter illegal drug and gambling activities.
I urge you to support efforts to create and pass a bill that makes cockfighting in Mississippi a felony with a much larger fine, and help put an end to this sadistic sport.
